Stuck? Throw yourself a party!

A couple of years ago, I was majorly stuck in writing the novel I am currently editing.

It was in the middle of NaNoWriMo, and making it to 50K seemed impossible.

Then I looked at my word count and realised that I was almost at a beautiful round number, I think it was 40K.

I opened a new document in Scrivener, and typed what happened next in the novel. When I had written the couple 1000 (really bad) words for my novel, I made it past the 40.000 mark.

I threw a party for myself. I had some delicious cookies, put on some music and danced, and ordered a book I had set for myself as a reward.

After that, the next 10.000 words were peanuts.

In hindsight, I could have had a 37.000-word party too, but I wanted to push myself past the 40.000.

The chapters you write like this are going to be hard to edit, especially if you leapt ahead in the story, and didn’t go back to the point where you were stuck.

But, that’s for the editor within to figure out 🙂
