Stay hydrated

Does this sound familiar?

Writer picks up her cup of tea, takes a sip and then pulls a face because her tea has gone cold. She add some warm tea to the mug, continues to write, and minutes later sips cold tea again.

This happens way more often than I care to admit. I just keep going and going and going, and just don’t stop, no matter what. I usually notice I am parched when I start coughing. 

I now have a rule that when the timer goes, I take a sip of my tea or drink some water. Only then I’m allowed to set the timer again. 

Staying hydrated is one way to keep distractions at bay and it  can be a great mindful reset. 

What’s a mindful reset? It is a simple way to calm your nerves and to centre yourself. 

What you do is:

  1. Pour yourself a cup of water
  2. Take a deep breath
  3. Take a sip and close your eyes. Let the water move through your mouth, engage your senses.
  4. Swallow the water, and keep breathing in a regular, relaxed pattern, stay aware of what you are feeling. Are there tensions in your body? Imagine the water moves to that part and clears away the tension.
  5. Open your eyes, take a deep breath, stretch and write!
