Today, we’re off to see Amanda Palmer in Cologne. It is going to be quite a lot of driving, but she is worth it 🙂
Both my husband and I love her music and her book, The Art of Asking. It is a moving memoir, offers tons of insights on being an artist, and shows that asking is indeed an art.
It has taught me a lot, and does every time I pick it up to read it.
In honor of our epic trip to Cologne (about three hours driving), here is one of my favorite quotes from her book.
Everybody struggles with asking. From what I’ve seen, it isn’t so much the act of asking that paralyzes us—it’s what lies beneath: the fear of being vulnerable, the fear of rejection, the fear of looking needy or weak. The fear of being seen as a burdensome member of the community instead of a productive one.
It points, fundamentally, to our separation from one another.
