Celebrate the return of the light

Today is the winter solstice, or yule. It marks the return of the light in our days. The end of winter is announced on the official start of it.

I love to write simple rituals to mark moments like this. I thought it would be nice to share the one I will do tonight 🙂 It is written specifically for doing in the darkness.

What you will need

  • three tea lights or white pillar candles
  • paper and pen
  • matches to light the candles

The preparation

  • the candles in a row the center of a table near a window (as the ritual starts with all the lights off in the room)
  • Write down three things you want to shine light on in your life. This can be something you would like to learn, an aspect of yourself you would like to come out more (for instance the creative side of you) or maybe a relationship you would like to work on.

The ritual

  • Open the curtains
  • Turn off all the lights
  • Strike a match and read the first item on your list out loud as you light the first candle
  • Say: “This light shines on my wish and illuminates the path I have to take towards it.”
  • Read the second while lighting the second candle
  • Say: “This light shines on my wish and illuminates the path I have to take towards it.”
  • Read the third while lighting the third candle
  • Say: “This light shines on my wish and illuminates the path I have to take towards it.”
  • Bask in the light
  • Get the paper again and write down what you will do first for each of the items on your list.

If possible, leave the candles burning throughout the night
