A deeply inspiring quote

I was reading a book just now, and was reminded of a quote. I felt such a deep gratitude for it, that I had to come here and write this blog post.

It is an important quote to me. In fact, I wouldn’t have started this Leap to Joy without it.

I read it one day, in one of the first books I read about Stoicism. Here it is:

Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: Some things are within our control, and some things are not.

It is only after you have faced up to this fundamental rule and learned to distinguish between what you can and can’t control that inner tranquility and outer effectiveness become possible.

I vividly remember reading this quote for the first time. I was both baffled, stunned, and felt an immense sense of relief.

I realised two powerful things.

  1. I had no control over the levels of pain I had
  2. I had control over how I responded to it.

This is exactly why this quote is essential in my path back to joy.

May it inspire you the same.
